Fenix PD30 - Truly Amazing

Review Date: February 10, 2009
Reviewer: Zenaissanceman,
I couldn't be more than pleased with my PD30. Actually, I couldn't wait for dark to try it out. I took my dog for a walk around my marina and the light from this little thing reflected off buoys and buildings across the lake. I'm a boater and the SOS mode is a nice touch, but the main reason I bought this was for its strobe function.

Instead of carrying a firearm or Taser, which are prohibited at my workplace, I carry this. We carry our night deposits from the store and that walk to the car is the worst part. This unit WILL and DOES disorient people to the point where I could get to safety if approached. My co-workers who spent hundreds+ on firearms laughed at me and I put them to the test. Even in broad daylight, my cynical volunteers were taken aback by the stunning, blinding light and changed their tune. It's about the same length as my Leatherman tool, so both fit on my belt with no discomfort. This thing is smaller than I thought and still can't believe the light it puts out!

The instructions were not very clear on the different settings. It does have different light intensities by not only turning the bezel, but also by tapping the thumb cap.

This is worth every penny.
Kicks Butt!

I've had my PD30 for a couple weeks now and I'm always looking for excuses to use it.

The low setting is plenty of light for just finding your way around indoors.

Medium is enough light for just about any indoor use. It's great.

High might be overkill indoors, unless you're part of a swat team or something.

The SOS feature is nice, but it seems a little slow to me. It's at the end of the "normal" mode cycle so it doesn't get in the way.

The output on the max setting is absolutely insane for a flashlight of this size. I have yet to need this much light for anything other than amusing myself and astonishing others.

The strobe feature is fun. I'm not a police officer or anything so I probably won't need it, but it's cool. If you want to get attention in a hurry, this will definitely do the trick. You may also induce a siezure or two in the process.

The flashlight is light and it fits into a pocket easily. You could carry it every day, but I prefer my slightly smaller Fenix P2D for that task. The P2D is not quite as bright as the PD30 but it's still phenomenal for the smaller size.

I have yet to find out what "waterproof to IPX-8 standard" means, but I've had mine out in the rain a few times, even snow. It was nice to not worry that I might fry it. I've had no problems at all with it so far.

If I lost this flashlight I would buy another one immediately. You really can't go wrong with this. I can't imagine anyone not liking one as a gift. It's versatile, tough, small, waterproof, looks great, and its illumination capability on max is staggering. I'm impressed.
Great Light

Amazing light for the size. The lowest lumen setting works well for finding your way through a trail in the woods. However, you can light up the night with 220 lumens that projects a very impressive distance. The light I purchased was equipped with a battery and belt holster. Its small size makes it perfect for hooking to your belt like a Leatherman. Typically you pay for what you get and in this case and the performance of this light and the robust construction make it a great investment.
Outstanding pocket flashlight

I am very pleased! Let's cut to the chase first. I work in a bad part of town, in which the light is very limited. Last night I walked around the block and down the alleys, occasionally turning the light on to shine it into an abandoned yard, an empty building, etc. The light was crisp, bright, and effective!

By way of comparison, it is brighter than both the old C cell and D cell full size Maglights that I used to own. It is brighter than the single cr123 Surefire that I own, and at least as bright as the Stinger that I keep in my truck. The light is a very crisp white color though, where the Stinger gives off a yellowish light.

I enjoyed using the different levels of light, but I would only use those around the house. If I were searching for a suspect or clearing a house, then I would definitely use the highest setting. I had no use for the SOS, but the strobe light would be very effective for signaling a chopper or just getting peoples attention.

The fit and finish were great, and the price cannot be touched. The flashlight is about half the size of my Stinger, and very lightweight. Most of the people I work with wear suits, and everyone felt that this could be worn on the belt, or carried in a pocket without damaging your clothes. A female officer that looked at my light last night is buying one to keep in her purse.

Overall I was pleased with the Fenix product. I just ordered a similar Fenix flashlight that uses AA batteries to keep in my motorcycles hard bags.
I use this light on average 6 times a day

I use this light on my belt daily as I'm often in dark places with my employment. After two months, I still love it. Great options with the different light intensity settings. The holster that comes with it lasted about a week. Trying to find a more robust belt holster has been challenging. This is an odd size diameter. Other that the holster issues, this has been a great performer. I used to have a streamlight Polystinger, and I love the size of this light much better and it's brighter.
